Bauknecht is venturing a glimpse into the future and presenting a visionary design model: the first round washing machine. With the prototype, which was created in collaboration with Berlin designer Arman Emami, household appliance manufacturer Bauknecht wants to underscore its innovative acumen and present a foretaste of the design of the future.

“Although the pragmatic, box-like shape of normal washing machines is logical, it’s totally lacking in emotion”, explains Emami – which is why he departed from the classic style and liberated the appliance from its corners and edges. With its special blend of function and form, the Bauknecht machine is intended to provide a glimpse of what direction design for our homes might take in future. Emami’s inspiration for the design prototype came from nature itself. He gave the exterior of the machine organic curves and brought it more into line with its function. The round drum and rotating motion of washing machines form the basis of the new design: a round, fluid form.

The designer has successfully reduced the Bauknecht design object to its essentials without eliminating any important elements. Emami wants to make the washing machine presentable – and has thus given it a minimalistic shape, a tinted glass door featuring a push-to-open mechanism and puristic controls. The Berlin-based designer wants to liberate the washing machine from the furthermost corner of the room or its banishment to the basement and integrate it into a modern living environment – regardless of whether its new home is an open-plan eat-in kitchen or a generously designed bathroom. “As a decorative element, the washing machine should be an eye-catcher in its own right, something that doesn’t need to be hidden away.”

“It has always been important to Bauknecht to ensure its products, product design and technology are in tune with the times and respond to what its customers want”, says Viola Linke, Brand Loyalty Manager at Bauknecht. “With this prototype design model, we’ve gone one step further. With the unusual look of the round washing machine, Bauknecht is showing a forward-looking design version that will have a positive and permanent impact on the ambience of the home thanks to its organic form.”
